The Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program aims to provide systems analysis theory and practical tools in support of policy solutions to help manage and secure global ecosystems services.
ESM supports planning to achieve transition to sustainable management of Earth systems in various geographical areas and sectors by:
- Developing novel Earth observation tools based on high quality data streams generated from citizen science initiatives; tools are developed to measure Earth’s metabolic processes, such as changes in land cover and forest biomass.
- Providing policy impact assessments to evaluate concrete policy options for agriculture, forestry, nature conservation, climate, and bio-economy at the global, regional, national, and subnational scales.
- Investigating the feasibility of long-run development pathways by participating in integrated assessment studies that crosscut IIASA programs.
